Julia Levensaler, Principal Miller School

Miller school is a Pre-K-6 elementary school of 330 students and approximately 60 staff members. We are located in beautiful Midcoast Maine in a clamming and lobstering community on the Medomak River.

At Miller we strive to be a respectful school where everyone feels safe and welcome and can do his or her best. We use the principles of Responsive Classroom to teach the social curriculum, build community, and improve academics.

We are currently beginning implementation of Tier 3 for PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports), a process for teaching students expectations for behavior in all areas of the school and then providing extra support for those who need it.

We use data to inform instruction and improve student achievement, holding regular meetings with teachers, interventionists and special educators in order to find what works best for students.

Our district has joined the Maine Partnership for Comprehensive Literacy with the University of Maine and has trained most classroom teachers in using the workshop model for literacy. Instructional coaches are stationed at Miller to provide support throughout the year.

While the State labeled us a Priority School last year, we are making progress and on the Fall 2013 NECAP close to 60% of our students were proficient or above in reading and 46% were proficient or above in math. We will continue to improve our practice so that all students reach proficiency in math and reading.

We welcome you to come and visit and see the great things that are going on at Miller School.
