MMS Principal's Message May, 2008
Hello, to all readers in the MMS community. Before our big move to our new school, it was appropriate for me to update my message and answer any questions that are out there for students, staff, parents and community members. As I have done in the past, I will use the Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) format in hopes of meeting everyone's need for current information. If I miss the mark, please do not hesitate to contact me at any of the numbers below:
542-0315
785-4330

I would also like to use this space to urge all interested citizens to participate in the budget approval process this year. Changes in state law now require a public budget meeting prior to the referendum for voters to approve the budget request. At this meeting, the budget can be approved or reduced. It cannot be expanded. This meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 31 at 1 PM.
The budget that is approved at that meeting is then sent to the voters for a referendum vote on Tuesday, June 10. In another change, that will be an up or down vote on the entire budget, rather than individual votes on each line of the budget. We hope to see as many citizens as possible at both the district meeting and at the polls. Thank you in advance for your participation.
FAQ about Medomak Middle School
1. What is the daily schedule for MMS?
With the move to the Medomak campus, MMS will be on the HS time schedule. Middle school students throughout the district will ride the bus on the high school schedule. Classes will start next year at 7:40 and school gets out at 2:00 each day. Parents and students should watch the papers in August to find out what time the bus picks up in your area.
2. How were the name, mascot and school colors chosen?
In the spring of 2006, middle school staff were asked to submit possible choices for school identity. From those ideas, some common themes emerged. These were placed on a ballot which went out to the community both on paper and electronically. When the votes were tallied, we became the Medomak Middle School River Hawks! Our school colors are navy blue and gold.
3. What after school opportunities will there be for students?
We are excited about the activities we will be able to offer for students starting this fall. This will be a combination of activities that have been offered in the past and some new opportunities, too. We had hoped to have an after school bus to support these activities, but with budget constraints and rising fuel prices, this was not possible. We hope from the list below, all students can find something to add to their involvement.
After school art Drama Mathcounts Yearbook Student Council
Homework Club Soccer Cross country Wrestling Basketball
Cheering Baseball Softball Track Intramurals
Green Thumbs Gardening Recycling
After school activities to be determined by interest and volunteer availability
4. What classes are offered at MMS?
All student are on 2 or 3 person teaching teams which provide instruction in Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies. In addition, students also receive instruction in Health, Art, and Physical Education. Students can also elect to take part in Band and/or Chorus. For the first time in SAD 40, students in the 8th grade will also have Foreign Language. This will be an introduction to both French and Spanish for all students to expand their cultural horizons and prepare them for foreign language instruction at Medomak Valley High School.
5. How is the building organized? As you look at MMS, there are two wings. The wing on the left is the classroom wing where all students homerooms are. For next year, the 8th grade will be downstairs and the 7th grade upstairs. Because we loop with our students, students will stay with their teachers in their rooms for two years. The center of the building between the wings is set aside for administration, art, guidance, library, day treatment and health clinic. The wing on the right as you look at the front of the building contains the health and foreign language rooms, cafeteria and kitchen and the gym.
6. Is the building done, and when can we see it?
At this writing, there are only a few items left to complete. Within the building, we are awaiting final water tests on the well before water is turned on in the building. When that happens, we will be able to bring the public in. On the outside, many of you have seen that final landscaping work is being completed. That, along with final paving around the building and some overseeding of the ballfields are scheduled to be completed over the next month.
In closing, I want to thank all of the SAD 40 community for your support and patience as we have worked together to make Medomak Middle School a reality for our students. I believe strongly that this will be a school that we all can be proud of.
Respectfully submitted,
Ben Vail, MMS Principal
