Welcome to Union Elementary School!  I am Jon Caron, principal of this K-6 school in Knox County.  Union has a population of 2209, based on the 2000 census, and the school has a student population of 127.

This year the students have been piloting tests from NWEA—Northwest Evaluation Association.  These tests, known as Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), were taken by students from grade 2 through grade 6 in the fall.  The second round of tests will be taken by students the beginning of February with a third round administered in May.

Teachers have been working with the data from the first round of testing to best meet the needs of the students in their classrooms.  Sometimes this means they may differentiate their instruction to provide the best “connection” to students and to how they learn.  This data is also used to identify students that may require more support from their teacher or another individual in the school.  Teachers are also using the data to provide a needed challenge to those students that, according to the testing data, have already mastered key concepts being covered.

Our students are very appreciative of the hard work that our parent-teacher organization has done.  The new playground equipment is a big hit with everyone!  If you are interested in joining our PTC, please contact Mrs. Packard at the school.

As the middle school begins their move to Waldoboro, the elementary is looking at a number of changes to come.  Certainly all this will work itself out in the coming months.

Volunteers are always welcome.  Any interested individual should contact Mrs. Davis in the office.

I would still ask that parents make every effort to ensure that your child arrives at school on time every day.  I also ask that doctor appointments be scheduled outside of the school day to allow teachers the maximum amount of uninterrupted teaching time.

As always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.  Together we can make a world of difference to the children of Union.
